Walks and steps

Walks that drain, steps with an even rise

A walk or a set of steps is where people get hurt when it's wrong. The slope and the rise matter more here than anywhere else on the property.

We set the fall so water leaves the walk and the door. Steps get an even rise, and a landing where the door swings. The base is the same compacted stone as a patio, and the edges are locked so nothing creeps.

What's included

  • Fall away from the house and the door

  • Even rise on every step

  • Borders and soldier courses

  • Cuts made to fit, not filled with mortar

Grey block pavers and a gravel strip around a stone-edged garden bed, with a wooden fence behind

What decides the cost

What changes the price of a walk

  • Length and width

Longer walks and wider ones add area. Curves add cuts.

  • Steps and landings

Each step is its own build, with its own rise and its own base.

  • Slope and drainage

A walk on a slope may need a retaining edge or a drain line.

  • Borders

A soldier course or a contrasting border is a line of its own.

Questions

Walk and step questions

How much does a paver patio or driveway cost?

It depends on the area, how deep we dig, how much stone the soil calls for and which paver you pick. We don't give a number for a yard we haven't seen. At the visit we measure and probe the soil, and the written estimate lists every line. The section on how pricing works explains what moves it.

What happens at the estimate visit?

Sapna or Tri walks the yard, measures, probes the soil, checks the slope and the machine access, and talks through pattern and color with samples in hand. It takes about an hour. They tell you when the written estimate will arrive before they leave.

What should I do before you arrive?

Clear the area of furniture and planters, and tell us about anything buried that isn't on the public map: an irrigation line, a dog fence, low-voltage lights. We call 811 before we dig, and public utilities are marked for free. Mark sprinkler heads you want to keep.

Do I need a permit?

Work in the public right-of-way, such as a driveway apron, and some walls and steps need one in most Columbus-area cities. We tell you at the visit whether your job does and who applies. The permit fee is not in the estimate unless the estimate says it is.
